Protect yourself from future breaches

Skiff announced on Feb 9, 2024 that it’ll be discontinuing its privacy services following its acquisition by Notion. Users will lose not only their encrypted email service, but also their encrypted email addresses by August 9, 2024. This means that all existing Skiff users need to migrate their Skiff data out of Skiff, and find a better alternative for encrypted emailing, as soon as possible.

Fortunately, Skiff users can switch to Cloaked to access encrypted email service and several other user privacy features such as password management, customizable encrypted identity sharing, phone numbers, and time-based OTPs.

What is Skiff?

Skiff has been an open-source platform for sending encrypted emails. Skiff also offers alias email addresses to users, which can be customized based on users’ preferences. It has also offered an encrypted calendar for taking note of important dates and keeping their schedules private.

Skiff has also supported storing additional information, documents, and pictures in an encrypted drive.

Why are people migrating from Skiff?

Migrating from one platform to another is a norm in the digital space, but recently, more people have had to migrate from Skiff to other platforms, and here’s why:

Notion purchase

Notion, offering cloud-based task-organizing and note-taking services for a diverse online community of tens of millions, recently acquired Skiff. This acquisition means that Notion now controls Skiff and its app and services. Notion acquired Skiff for the team’s talents, but will not be continuing Skiff’s services.

Skiff shutdown

Notion has decided to discontinue Skiff six months following the acquisition. This means Skiff mail, pages, calendar, and drive will stop working in August. Users may lose any data they don’t migrate from this app within the specified six months – forever. Skiff users are on the hunt for alternatives and other privacy-first products.

Although Cloaked and Skiff have varied offerings, many users are finding Cloaked to have great privacy benefits to supplement their online activity.

How to migrate from Skiff to Cloaked

With Cloaked, you can make your data invisible by generating unlimited identities and accessing next-level privacy protection.

1. Create your Cloaked account

cloaked account

The first step in setting up your Cloaked is to create your Cloaked account. For this, you would need to enter a username, your master password, and a recovery email address on the sign-up page

2. Set up a Cloaked identity

Once you sign up on Cloaked, you are redirected to your Cloaked dashboard, where you can now generate new identities with a click of a button. Cloaked helps you with this via popups to get you started.

For each site that you have registered an account with Skiff credentials, you can generate a new Cloaked email to replace your Skiff email. When doing so, you can also generate a new Cloaked phone number as a bonus.

You can use these email addresses and phone numbers to receive emails and calls respectively through email and call forwarding.

3. Manage online identities

Add the Cloaked browser extension to your local browser. This way, when you want to create an online account, Cloaked will ask if you want to generate a Cloaked identity for it.

If you say yes, Cloaked will automatically create a unique email address and password for that account–and any time where someone is asking for your personal information. You can create, share, and save real working phone numbers, emails, passwords, and more.

This feature enhances your online privacy by ensuring that each account is linked to a different email address–increasing your online privacy and reducing the risk of identity theft and data breaches.

A new mental model: switching from Skiff to Cloaked

Instead of just migrating your Skiff account to a different email provider—with Cloaked, you receive a comprehensive, full stack approach to online privacy. By combining unlimited virtual identities, password management, and other proactive privacy features, you keep your communication organized and secure.

Digital identities for email & more

Digital identities include proxy mail addresses and phone numbers you can use and password-manage anywhere online. These identities can be used in the same way as a normal email address—to sign in to online accounts, send and receive texts and calls, send and receive emails, sign up to receive newsletters, and buy your favorite items online.   All messages are e2e encrypted.

Cloaked offers unlimited digital identities to users for next-level data privacy protection. These identities are a complete substitute for your personal contact details, which should be private. These contact information protect your personal information and make it difficult for data brokers to gather information on you.

Cloaked also has a dashboard, a central location for users to manage all of their online identities. In this dashboard, you will find your inbox, where all emails to and from your Cloaked email addresses go.

Your Cloaked Inbox also has spam filters, so you don’t have to worry about endless messages you don’t want to see. The platform has also enabled call and message forwarding so you can request to forward text messages, calls, and emails from specific handles and contacts to your main inbox.

Cloaked supports secure identity sharing. So, for instance, if you want to share your Airbnb login details with a trusted friend, you don’t have to send it via plain text unprotected. With Cloaked, you can share this information securely via passworded links.

Cloaked also allows you to customize the exact information you want to share, so you can choose only to share the email address and an OTP. You can also choose the time for which you want this information to be shared, after which your friend will lose access to the account.

When you use the Cloaked browser extension, you can generate new identities on the go. Cloaked will show a pop-up asking if you want to generate a new identity when you try to sign into any website online. This gives you a seamless experience as all you have to click is “Generate,” and Cloaked will generate a new identity for that account.

Cloaked will generate a new, strong password for that account, and all of this goes to your secure and encrypted Cloaked database, so you don’t have to repeat this process regardless of the device you use.

Generate your first digital identity.

Password manager capabilities

Password managers are platforms that generate, store, and manage users' passwords and autofill them on associated sites and apps.

Cloaked combines password management with digital identity generation so users can access both within one platform. But Cloaked doesn’t just offer basic password features. Cloaked password management goes beyond the traditional create, store, and autofill passwords.

Cloaked auto-generates passwords for users once they create any new identities and these passwords are stored in an encrypted server right from the user’s device. This also means that while users' passwords are securely encrypted, they can access them anywhere.

Cloaked also supports importing passwords from other password managers, so if you already have a password manager, you don’t have to worry about how to import your passwords to Cloaked. Cloaked password importation also works for passwords you save as CSV files on your desktop.

Cloaked syncs your password across all of your devices, so once you add Cloaked on any of your devices, you can enjoy a seamless login without setting up new identities on the new device.

Cloaked also has an “AutoCloak” feature that supports secure password management. This feature batch simultaneously replaces details of your multiple identities, including your email addresses, phone numbers, usernames, and passwords with anonymous Cloaked information. So you have to choose which identity you want to cloak. This feature is very effective when you feel some of your account details have been exposed or tampered with.

Cloaked has two-factor authentication enabled with time-based OTPs that act as a second layer of security. These OTPs are available everywhere in Cloaked and work on mobile and browser extensions, so you can just click copy to paste wherever you need it.

Additional privacy features

Cloaked takes privacy seriously and ensures that no one can access any of the information you save on Cloaked without authorization. Cloaked is built on a zero-knowledge architecture for advanced privacy, unlike browser-based privacy solutions like Google Password Manager. This means that no one can access your Cloaked account except you, not even Cloaked can see what you save on your account unencrypted.

Cloaked also has unique user databases so that each user's data is stored separately, further enhancing security. This data distribution prevents any potential data breaches from affecting more than one user. It also creates an encrypted barrier between users and Cloaked, increasing security on the platform.

Cloaked also offers client-side end-to-end encryption for all communications through the app. This ensures data privacy when sending emails, messages, or sharing files, as everything is encrypted from your device to the recipient's, ensuring no intermediaries can read your data. Your data can only be decrypted using your private key held by only you.

Reimagine email privacy by switching from Skiff to Cloaked

As Skiff discontinues its operation, adding Cloaked to your privacy toolkit should be the next thing on your radar if you value your email privacy. Cloaked has several email privacy and online privacy features that make it not just another alternative to Skiff–but an upgrade.

Cloaked elevates your online experience with:

  • Unlimited proxy emails and phone numbers
  • Spam-protected inboxes for several email addresses
  • Autocloak for changing login details to several online accounts simultaneously
  • Custom sharing of account information via password-protected links
  • Password manager to create, save, manage, and share passwords securely
  • Time-based one-time passcodes for an extra layer of security
  • Additional information storage
  • Zero-knowledge architecture for data privacy
  • Unique user databases for increased security
  • End-to-end encryption on all data stored on Cloaked
  • Cloaked pay (coming soon)
